"What is love?"

Love in His word

You can’t live in the 21st century if you don’t have the art of making complex things simple. But in our attempt to do this, somehow have we complicated our life? In our time, people say “I Love You” more on SMS than when they talk to each other. Gone are those days of poetry running to pages, we have come to the generation were poets have only 160 characters to express their “love”. But then again, what is love?

Enrique’s latest song “Tonight I am loving you” has another version which simply takes the word “love” and replaces it with the F-word. Now are both of them the same? Greg Laurie, one of the most passionate evangelists working amongst the youth warns all the teenagers saying, “Guys will love to get sex, and girls will have sex to get love”. I would like to continue from there and say, that is not love but that is lust.

In the 80’s there was still some difference between love and lust. But as we modernise, or simplify things for ourselves, we have made, both love and lust look the same. In our times, love is about physical attraction, it is about making the other person comfortable, it is about the superficial things, it is about the things that change with age. The current definition of love in the world is definition of lust in the Bible. The current definition of love is the love of the eyes, not the love from the heart.

Is love about what we are receiving or is it about what we are giving? Is love earned or is it yearned? Is love about the physical touch or is it about the emotional touch? Surely, love is not about the eye’s it’s about the vision. Love is not about the lips it’s about the words. Love is not about the hands, it’s about the actions. Love is not about gorgeous looks but it is about having a beautiful heart.

As I write these lines, the words “God is love”(1 John 4:8| Bible) makes more sense to me than ever. As I write these lines the words “People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart”(1 Samuel 16:7| Bible) opens my eyes to the beauty of what God actually wanted love to be. For God,

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.”(1 Corinthians 13:4-8 |Bible)

As He loved us, and only so should we love. Not like the world, Not with our eyes.

Love is about the heart, not about the eyes
