Understanding Suffering - The Christian Perspective

Image
Pic Courtesy - Guardian - Internet Good news is hard to find these days, and the question “Where is God?” or “Where is God during such times of suffering?” keeps coming up in times like this. In this blog, I try to present the Christian perspective to suffering. I hope the post helps both believers and friends from other faith, understand suffering from the Christian perspective. Before we move on to the purpose of suffering, I would like to address a few critical questions. I shall be borrowing many of these thoughts from Ravi Zacharias and his talk on suffering. You can hear the talk on the link - Ravi Zacharias – Where is God in the Midst of Suffering and Injustice? The 1st question I want to address is Does suffering in this world mean God is absent?  The important point to note here is we are defining something as good and something as bad, which means that there has to be a definition of good and bad somewhere, this means that there needs to be a legal frame...

Walking On Water

Image
One of the most difficult times in a person’s life, is when all he can see around him is a storm. The signs of hope are completely missing, and as that sinking feeling grows, we tend to throw our lives away to anything that will give us the first sign of hope. And through the ages men have trusted, God-men, mystical powers, even elected governments, with the hope that someday things might turn around. But as time goes by, we all come to realize putting our trust on men is one of the most futile things anyone can do. Politicians, god men, all of them come with empty promises. Come to think of it, how can any of them fulfill anything after all, their life is as futile as ours, as short-spanned as ours, their vision as blurred as ours, their selfishness, as defined as ours. Humans, are programmed to think of themselves first and then about the others. The few humans who don’t follow this principle are termed saints in todays’ generation. Also surprisingly we have come to q...

New Year - New Resolutions!

Image
Another year passes us by, another 52 weeks, another 365 days. And like many years in the past, we will all sit back and introspect ourselves. We will do a little retrospect on the year, analyze what went right and what went wrong, at the end we come out with something we proudly call "The New Year Resolutions". But if you take a look at these resolutions, you will realize how self-centered and self-obsessed we have become. Come to think of it, our self-obsession forced Oxford to introduce a new word in its dictionary - "Selfie". As a generation, our obsession with our lives is disturbing.  We are educated but ill-informed, we know our 'facebook' but we are barely able to grasp the world around us. Come to think of it, not very long ago the creator of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg said  "A squirrel dying in front of your house may be more relevant to your interests right now than people dying in Africa" A squirrel dying in front of y...

"How messed up can my nation get?" - A Poem - by Giftson Jeyakumar

Image
How messed up can my nation get? How lost in despair? From a land that taught the world “Peace”, to a land where sorrows are shared. From a land that gave the world it’s “Religions”, to a land where women are scared. We respected them, we looked up to them as goddesses, I don’t understand why today we look at them as something less? A brother could sleep in peace, Knowing through the night his sister won’t be harmed. Today he lives on a prayer, Cause you can’t predict the coming of the storm. We are nation young and resilient. But without God this shall be our predicament! We can have a million resolutions, But what we need today is a God Revolution. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, Probably that is what holds the key to our freedom. This New Year I make a wish, Let my nation awaken to the place where true freedom exists, Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high, Where women are respected and the men stand by their side. Till...

"A Different Christmas"

Image
A Different Christmas -1 Materialism and Capitalism are two concepts that rule the world today. Slowly but surely our festivals have become more about ourselves and less about the Lord. We are so lost in giving and receiving gifts that we end up forgetting ‘The Giver of Life’. We are so busy sharing our little stories that we miss sharing ‘The Greatest Story Ever Told’. It worries me that many of us this Christmas are forgetting the most important lessons that the Lord wanted us to learn through the Christmas story: Submission, Faith and Humility. Submission: She had dreams, hopes and aspirations just like any other bride preparing for her wedding. Life had been good to her, she was content with what she had, and though chaos surrounded her, she was at peace because she had faith in God. She believed in Jehovah and she knew that He had not abandoned them. Living under foreign rulers was not exactly pleasant but she knew that the Messiah woul...

Generation of Misfits

Image
A generation of misfits that’s what we are, trying hard to fit-in, match-up, if it all fails we just fake-it up. From fake noses to fake chests, we have it all. We will do anything just to look right, anything to make ourselves feel right and anything to sound right.  Sometimes in our quest of trying to be this Mr. Superman we lose ourselves, lose our identity and the in the process lose the purpose for which we were created. We try to shape, modify and recreate ourselves so much that in time, we end up becoming an imitation, and miss out on the originality that God had engrained in us. But then again, being is misfit is alright, trying to fit-in is not.  Who better to understand this, than from our Lord Jesus! Imagine being the Prince of the universe, being the King of kings; Imagine walking in roads of gold, living in rooms of diamond; Imagine living in a land where there’s no disease, no trouble, no pain, no sorrow, just plain simple love and peace. A...
